This section dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi and the Cinema presents, without any particular pretension of inclusivity, a series of posters for sound films tied to Verdi’s production.
The films examined fall into different categories. Priority has been given to opera films performed by actors and then been dubbed by singers, and to those that present the story of a Verdi opera accompanied by the composer’s original music, without forgetting biographical films about the composer or the history of Casa Ricordi, famous for its long standing relationship with Verdi. The section covers a chronological period from the 1930’s till the present day.
This choice should not be seen as a critical analysis of the films but is meant to present, in a very general way, some suggestive works which will allow the viewer to reflect about the use of cinema as an important instrument for the dissemination of Verdi’s opera in the nineteenth century.
